The Complete Guide to Coach in 2026
In 2026, Coach, a major name in American fashion, is posting strong sales growth. The company first opened as a modest leather workshop, became a handbag specialist and now sells clothing, shoes and accessories in stores worldwide. Over the decades, its core formula has stayed steady: well-made leather goods priced lower than those of the traditional European luxury houses. A federal court has defined that segment as accessible luxury, set apart from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.
This guide sets out where Coach came from, who owns and runs it, how big the business has become and what it sells. The guide also covers how a full-price coach store compares with a coach outlet, which can easily cause confusion. The prices given are observed market prices rather than an official price list, and every figure is dated to its source.
Humble Beginnings: From Manhattan Workshop to American Brand
In 1941, a modest family-run leather workshop was set up in Manhattan, and it is to that workshop that Coach traces its origins. According to Coach itself, six artisans worked in a loft on 34th Street, producing wallets, billfolds and similar small leather goods for men. Handbags came later, and so did the Coach name, which dates from about 1960 or 1961. In spite of a lingering error, Miles and Lillian Cahn were not in fact the founding owners of the workshop.
Miles and Lillian Cahn joined the business in 1946, with Miles managing the factory by around 1950. In 1961 the couple purchased the stake of the original owners and took over. It was reportedly Lillian Cahn who suggested adding women’s handbags, which would redefine the company. Miles Cahn is credited with glovetanned leather, a finish inspired by the way a worn baseball glove softens with use.
The Bonnie Cashin Years
Bonnie Cashin, who served as Coach’s first lead designer, is the designer most strongly associated with early Coach. As reported, she was engaged on a contract basis instead of as a staff employee, and she was not a co-founder. Coach’s own pages give the year she started as both 1961 and 1962, which makes that date a small puzzle. There is little question, however, that she continued designing for Coach until 1974.
Cashin introduced the brass turnlock closure in 1964, and Coach says she drew red coach bag on the toggle on the top of her convertible. Coin-purse details, side pockets and brighter colors also count among her credited contributions, and these touches loosened up the brand’s look. The turnlock is to this day one of the most recognizable Coach details, and it appears on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.
From Sara Lee to Tapestry: Owners and Listings
Sara Lee Corporation bought Coach in July 1985. The company went public in October 2000, and Sara Lee is said to have sold out entirely the following year. Coach’s Signature collection, with the « C » monogram, launched in 2001, so the pattern is a recent addition and not a mid-century heritage motif. The parent company, Coach, Inc., took the name Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, and its stock ticker moved from COH to TPR.
Only the parent company changed its name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names. Coach, Inc. had acquired Stuart Weitzman in 2015, but Tapestry sold that shoe label to Caleres in a deal that closed on 4 August 2025. In 2026 Tapestry owns only two brands, Coach and Kate Spade, and Coach is by far the larger of the two.
The Blocked Capri Acquisition
Capri Holdings, parent company of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo, became the subject of a takeover agreement unveiled by Tapestry on 10 August 2023. In April 2024 the Federal Trade Commission moved against the deal, and it asked a federal court for a preliminary injunction to stop it. That preliminary injunction was issued on 24 October 2024 by a federal judge in the Southern District of New York. The ruling did not decide the merits, yet it stopped the companies from closing the deal while the challenge played out.
In its decision, the court accepted that an accessible luxury handbag market exists, distinct from both mass-market bags and true luxury. Concluding that the legal process was unlikely to conclude before their February 2025 deadline, Tapestry and Capri terminated their agreement on 14 November 2024. Since the acquisition was never consummated, Tapestry owns no part of Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo.
Who Runs Coach Today
At the parent company, Tapestry, the chief executive is Joanne Crevoiserat. The brand itself is headed by Todd Kahn, Coach’s CEO and brand president, who took the job on an interim basis in July 2020 and has held it permanently since April 2021. Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was made public in June 2013, is the creative lead.
His first Coach collection was reportedly unveiled in February 2014, and in 2026 he remains Coach’s creative director. Before Coach, he is reported to have been creative director at Loewe following a stint at Mulberry. During his tenure, Coach has turned to its archive, reissuing older designs as well as reworking vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. The Cunard Building in New York was the setting for his Fall 2026 collection on 11 February 2026.
The Figures Behind Coach
Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026 offers the most complete picture of Coach’s size. Coach’s net sales climbed 24% on the prior year to $6,914.7 million, and Tapestry as a whole posted $8,004.2 million. Put another way, roughly 86% of group sales came from Coach.
At the end of that fiscal year Coach had 973 directly operated stores, with 336 in North America and 637 outside North America. The figure of about 1,299 stores that also circulates covers every Tapestry store rather than Coach alone. Growth at a mid-teens percentage rate in the average unit retail price of Coach handbags during the year was also disclosed by Tapestry. Tapestry has attributed the increase partially to a pullback in promotions.

What Coach Sells: Bags, Clothing and Shoes
The core of the business is still handbags, and the current coach handbags mix structured icons with softer, slouchier leather. The Tabby, based on a 1970s archive shape, launched in 2019; the Rogue debuted in 2016 and came back in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, launched in August 2024. The Empire Carryall first appeared on the Fall 2024 runway before its release in February 2025. At the upper end, a Rogue 25 in alligator was observed at $8,000, the highest bag price observed, whereas the Kisslock Frame Bag, reportedly the opening look of the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350. As the Coach Originals line reissues archive designs as newly made bags, the bags are new reissues rather than vintage.
Ready-to-wear has become a serious part of the range: coach clothing for Fall 2026 brought varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. In the same show, the brand also presented blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. The fashion press reported loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall, and the footwear line also includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker. Coachtopia, which launched on 20 April 2023 as a circular-design sub-brand, is operated by Coach alongside Coach (Re)Loved, which launched in 2021 and is reported to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces.
Full-Price Coach Store, Coach Outlet or Online: Where to Shop
The current collections are sold in a full-price coach store, with the largest flagships branded under the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue is reported to have opened in 2016, while a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as targeted for 2027. Over in London, the Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and the brand is also available in the UK at Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis. To see the latest season, look to the full-price range, whether you want a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket.
Both outlet stores and the official online outlet section on Coach’s own website form Coach Outlet, Coach’s own official channel. Outlet merchandise made for the outlet channel was put at around 85% of outlet goods in a 2014 quote from Coach’s head of investor relations, a figure that is now dated, and Tapestry has since talked about bringing some full-price product into outlets. Asserting that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags, goes beyond the public evidence. In the UK, shoppers can find outlet stores at Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet. Shoppers sometimes type « couch » or « cosch » when searching for the brand, so make sure that any site promising big discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
