Six Rounds, Five Apps and No Participation Trophies
Short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity some time ago. For Q1 2025, Sensor Tower counted about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US generating 49% of it. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had risen to about $750M, while full-year 2025 ended up at roughly $2.8–3B. Five names dominate the conversation, namely ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave, and anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has come across at least one of them. On the surface, the apps seem identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or reelshort tv two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. Underneath, however, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and the differences affect what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Big Comparison Grid
Here is the full field on one screen before the rounds get underway. Prices track the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. We took install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. Media Partners Asia estimates the market shares, which cover the microdrama market outside China. A cell that says « not reported » means no reliable source released the figure; we would rather leave a gap than guess. Think of the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Owners and Scale
ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still carries the most weight. MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China; launched in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group. MPA also estimates its 2025 revenue at $785M and projects $1.05B for 2026. Launched in April 2023 and now holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. By Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first, although in Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M. Though DramaWave, often mistyped as « dreamwave », is the youngest app here, it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. The only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder is My Drama, even though it is the minnow with 5M+ Android installs. Sitting just outside this lineup, GoodShort holds, for context, about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
Round 2: Pricing
This is the round where the apps appear most alike. On the US App Store, ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at about $19.99, and each one renews automatically. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 « Weekly Pass Pro », and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. Auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99, show the different route DramaBox takes. The standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, so a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. The number on your screen may be different, because prices change by country, platform and promotion. Winner: DramaWave, as its monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals comfortably.
Round 3: Watching for Free
Free viewing is the area where the marketing turns loud and the details get thin. According to ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Checking in seven days in a row brings 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and « unlimited coins » generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Only third-party guides give DramaBox’s exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, though the app has free options too. Winner: clearly ReelShort.
Round 4: Platforms
Screens are where these apps genuinely part ways. ReelShort streams in a browser at reelshort.com, and progress syncs across devices, and it also covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android. ShortMax also offers web browsing, since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app. The trump card belongs to My Drama, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. If all you need is a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, though My Drama takes the living room.
Round 5: Library Size and Originals
On raw numbers, ShortMax is untouchable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. By January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, mostly dubbed Chinese adaptations. According to reports, more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort owns the best-known hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, which both went viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. Since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most interesting pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.
Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print
DramaWave runs away with this one. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video appear in its App Store listing, and no rival here is verified to offer offline viewing. For anyone switching between phone and laptop, ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk. The fine print merits a look too, as it varies more than the prices do. On any of these apps, deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms state refunds are not given « unless the paid product/service is unusable ». Round winner: DramaWave.
Best For: Our Final Picks
Since no single short drama app sweeps every round, the right choice depends on how you watch. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices, ReelShort is best for web viewing. For sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that overshadow everything else in the grid. Combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan, DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers. DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, is best for backing the current revenue leader. For free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort wins again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if all five tempt you.
